Having just touched down back in Aotearoa after winning fans across North America with a 14-date tour of the US and Canada, breakthrough New Zealand band Borderline today announce their debut self-titled album, to be released on June 26th via EMPIRE. The highly anticipated body of work from the Kiwi buzz band features recent singles “Terrify”, “Tainted” and “Watching It Burn”, plus brand new single “That Girl”, which drops today alongside a spooky, Scooby Doo adventure-inspired music video. The new single comes hot on the heels of the band’s recent nominations for Best Pop Artist and Breakthrough Artist of the Year at the Aotearoa Music Awards. And Borderline are just getting started!

New single “That Girl” is a jam that sees the band unashamedly lean into their 80s influences, and let their skills as live musicians shine through. "That Girl leans so hard into our love of 80s over the top instrumentation,” explains Borderline. “It’s littered with live vintage synths, sounds, and Michael Jackson / Prince inspired vocals. We are all so proud of how this song came together in the studio. The result of four musicians not shying away from self-indulgence. That Girl is a great representation of our musicianship, and what happens when we let loose a bit on our instruments and just have fun."

The official music video for “That Girl” was directed by Tom Grut and sees the boys explore a spooky haunted house. “The music video for That Girl was our most ambitious yet,” explains Borderline. “We knew this song needed a really high energy video, and the concept came really quickly. We shot the video at an old abandoned asylum now turned haunted house - it was a little spooky at times but it was the most fun shoot we’ve ever done. We really wanted to channel an old school Scooby Doo vibe with our outfits, set design and art direction which was so much fun to play around with. We’re really proud of us and our massive crew to have pulled it off, and we’re incredibly happy with how it turned out.“

Hailing from Auckland, Borderline is Ben Glanfield [guitar, vocals, keys], Jackson Boswell [drums, vocals], Matthew McFadden [lead guitar], and Max Harries [bass, sax]. With the band’s debut album set to drop on June 26th, fans can expect to hear a collection of pop, rock and funk, fusing the quartet’s undeniable chemistry to deliver music you can groove to.

“Our self-titled debut album is something we’re all incredibly proud of. It’s the sum of every single corner of musical inspiration from all four of us. Every song has its own character and place for us, shaped through sessions in home studios and late nights, before coming together in Roundhead’s Brick Room, taking advantage of the vintage synths and time piece guitars, as we explored and refined the overarching soundscape for the project.”

Still only aged 20 and 21, the accolades keep coming for the emerging act who have been friends since childhood. Nominated for Breakthrough Artist of the Year and Best Pop Artist at this year’s Aotearoa Music Awards, Borderline share the Pop category nomination with global superstars Lorde and Benee - not bad company for the band’s first nomination!

To celebrate the upcoming release of the band’s debut album, the quartet will soon be announcing a run of tour dates across Australia and New Zealand this winter. Stay tuned for the official tour announcement coming very soon!
