“Everything was feeling very mundane, the same old thing, never quite reaching what you’re setting out for,” says Ben. “I came up with the line ‘daydream like a shadow in line to see the sun’, and based the whole song on that idea. Chasing something that’s within sight but you can never quite get to.”
‘Never To Be Seen’ feels like golden hour. It’s lush, it’s warm and it still hits you right in the chest. Listening to it is like falling for someone you can’t quite have. It’s gorgeous, it aches a little, and you’ll keep coming back for more.
The cello is the star of the show. It opens the track with a grand, cinematic intro, tangled up with reversed guitar and bass that were kept from Ben’s original demo. It feels like the sun coming up backwards, and it pulls you straight onto that forecourt.
From there, the song is built like a slow sunrise. At its core, it’s simple: a band in a room, drums, bass, two guitars and vocals. But layer by layer it grows into something larger than life. The rhythm guitar swells through huge reverb and reverse delay, breathing in and out with every kick drum like the whole song is inhaling.
In the chorus, two vocals weave around each other, an inner monologue and an outside conversation having it out in real time. Then it all drops back to a breath before climbing again, higher and brighter, until a wailing guitar riff finally breaks through at the very end.
